Executive Director, Basel Action Network

Jim is the Founder and Executive Director of Basel Action Network (BAN). As an activist for over 30 years, his work on toxic waste and its trade has helped control pollution, safeguard communities and fragile ecosystems, protect the world’s poorest laborers from health hazards, while working to ensure reuse of the Earth’s limited resources. He has been a chief proponent of global environmental justice and an ethical circular economy within the United Nations Basel Convention since its adoption in 1989. He has overseen creation of the e-Stewards Certification Program, which certifies electronics recyclers to an industry gold standard for environmental and occupational health and safety protection. Prior to establishing BAN, Jim was the International Toxics Director for Greenpeace International. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Speech and Filmmaking from the University of Oregon.

Track: Markets and Global Trade 🛈Topics specific to products that come out of a recycling facility that can be sold as products or feedstock; ferrous metals; nonferrous metals (aluminum, copper, lead, zinc, tin, and precious metals); stainless steel and high-temperature alloys; plastics; recovered fiber (paper, corrugated, cartons); tires/rubber; electronics; glass; textiles; residential recyclers and materials recovery facilities; Basel Convention; OECD; import/export; and tariffs.
During the last meeting of the Basel Convention, two new proposals were adopted that may have profound impacts on the recycling of used electronic devices and other recycled materials. While these new proposals will not go into effect right away, it is imperative that you understand the implications and prepare in advance to meet these new compliance objectives.
